I've found myself wondering lately why the publishing industry has refrained from running advertising in books as a revenue source.
Does advertising take away from the book reading experience any more than it does magazine reading experience? Who knows?
Now, Amazon is seeking to answer the question, with a pair of recent patent applications, according to Fierce Mobile.
As Fierce explains, the patents are for inserting advertising to content optimized for the Kindle e-reader platform. The first patent, "On-Demand Generating E-Book Content with Advertising," outlines "a method of providing fixed computer-displayable content in response to a consumer request for content."
The second, "Incorporating Advertising in On-Demand Generated Content," describes a "system and method of incorporating advertisements in on-demand printed content."
I'm assuming Amazon will split revenues with publishers - which certainly couldn't hurt, given the state of the publishing industry.
And speaking of on-demand services, be sure to check out my new book, THE ON-DEMAND BRAND, which talks about, among many other things, how brands like Amazon and many others are launching on-demand digital services linked to their products.

But be sure to buy the hardbound book before the Kindle edition, okay!
