Forget Ringtones - 'Projectones' On The Way

Motorola_projector_phone_2 It's like Christmas in July (even if it's July  30).

SciFi.com is reporting that Motorola is building a prototype projector for mobile phones. So point your phone, and a 15-inch image appears before you at 845x480 pixels - or better-than-DVD quality.

Now this is just a prototype. But I happen to know of other manufacturers working on similar devices (that's all I can say). As someone who gives a lot of presentations, it's been on my personal wish list for some time.

But (perhaps) more important will be its impact in new social networking applications.

In BRANDING UNBOUND the book, I talk about the Nokia phone that projects messages that float in the air just above the user at the wave of the phone. Users can express themselves at parties, clubs or events, and they can communicate with others across the room.

With new projector technologies, that kind of socializing can become more prevalent, and won't require the user to wave their hands frantically to convey a message. Now, music and video can personalize the mobile experience.

Tie it to an incoming call, and teenyboppers will no doubt find creative new ways to use this useful - and potentially fun - technology.

I think I'll call them "projectones." And I think they can be really cool.

And the nightclubbing possibilities could be endless.
