Billboard & LG's 'Mobile Beat' Promo Turns Cell Phone Bloggers Into Concert Critics
Billboard and LG are helping you get in touch with your inner music critic.
It's new "Mobile Beat" promotion enables entrants to compete for the chance to play music critic for the summer. Submit photos and a 100-word essay at Billboard.com by next Friday, and you could win a spot as one of 30 music critics who are sent to concerts around the country this summer, where you'll review the concert and post your blog entries via LG camera phone.
According to today's New York Times, the contest, there's a good chance you could win. Launched May 18, more than 5,000 users have reviewed information about the contest, and only about 60 have actually entered. So far, that's a 50/50 chance of being selected. Once chosen, the mobile bloggers will compete for clicks for a free trip for two toe the Billboard Music Awards and LG mobile handsets.
As Jon Maron, sensior director for marketing at LG electronics MobileComm USA in San Diego tells the times, "The 15-to-24-year-old can't imagine a world without technology, so we have to think about our marketing programs in very different terms...The mobile phone is an extension of everything they do, and blogging is becoming as much of a news source for them as the news itself."
According to Scott McKenzie, group editorial director for Billboard magazine in New York, running a promotion like this has its challenges - especially when it comes to vetting entries.
"The hardest part is to make sure it's not the staff using fake names."
