NBA Gets Amp’d Over Mobile TV
The National Basketball Association wants a piece of your handset.
In what’s billed as a first for a major US pro sports team, the NBA TV cable network and Amp’d have double teamed to bring a video stream of live games to subscriber handsets. You know the drill: NBA games, daily news, video highlights and original NBA TV programs, including Ahmad Rashad’s “Tuesday Night with Ahmad.”
“Amp’d Mobile’s schedule of live basketball programming includes live games from the NBA, NCAA and top summer leagues that will span the entire year and allow basketball fans anytime access to their favorite teams,” says Seth Cummings, Senior Vice President, Content Development & Programming, Amp’d Mobile in a statement.
“We’re especially proud to deliver the first live broadcast of a U.S. major league sports game to mobile, along with a comprehensive and diverse offering of basketball games.”
There are some nice possibilities here. No, I don’t think people will go the handset when a TV (especially a large one) is nearby. But travelers will want to check in on their favorite teams.
And in-arena fans may like to have that instant replay and color commentary live on their handsets while they enjoy the game.
I actually like localized versions of this better, where people in the arena can access content and interact with live polling and Jumbotron quizzes and so forth.
But provided the stream is inexpensive to implement, and the entire business model doesn’t rely on it, this does offer an additional way for fans to get their b-ball on the go.
